Artist Bio

Nadja had a conventional upbringing in the middle of Germany. She lived with her family on the outskirts near forests and fields. Her love for threes and open landscapes can still be seen in her art work today. At middle school she found that drawing and the possibility of depicting something as realistic as possible was something she loved. She tried to achieve perfectionism in photorealistic drawing either real existing things or out of her imagination. Later on, she used pastels beside graphite and ruddle. It was during that time she started to analyze scenes in detail, the change of tones in dependence of light, perspective and she was fascinated by how a single line could change the overall impression of a scene or a portrait.

Although it was her great passion, she did not study art but due to her analyzing mind and her great ambition to understand the functional contexts in nature, she studied biology. Even though the connection of biology and painting is not obvious at the first sight, her art benefit a lot from microscopic drawings, anatomical studies, optics as well as chemistry.

Later, while already working in science, Nadja switched from monochromatic drawing to watercolor painting. The new medium allowed her to experiment with the combination of loose and very detailed painting. She was fascinated by the great variety of options the medium offered to her. Her style then was mainly influenced by realistic painters of the UK and USA. Watercolor was her preferred medium for several years till she discovered the possibilities that oil paints reveal to her and how well they suite for her style of painting.

Nadja lives in the south of Germany near the Black Forest following her passion as an artist now. She loves exploring the techniques of old masters, studying of restauration methods and continuously developing her skills by experimenting with not only different materials and techniques but also various painting styles.
